The Georgetown Law Journal is, first and foremost, a scholarly journal; central to our mission is the publication of rigorous and original contributions to the legal literature, both academic and practical. Articles and essays concerning all areas of the law are published in our six annual issues and our Annual Review of Criminal Procedure.
The Georgetown Law Journal is also committed to encouraging and developing students’ scholarly writing. To this end, the Journal typically publishes several select student notes in each issue.
The Journal receives over 2,000 submissions every year, many of them outstanding scholarly work. Unfortunately, space is limited and only a relatively small number of those articles can be selected for eventual publication.
Selection takes place on a per-volume basis. Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis, beginning in late January and concluding when the volume is filled, typically around mid-September.
Authors considering submitting a manuscript should read the Joint Law Review Statement on Article Length, a statement published jointly by many of the top law reviews reflecting general concern regarding the trend of overly lengthy articles.
To combat this trend, we strongly encourage authors to submit articles that are shorter than 30,000 words in length, including text and footnotes. Authors are encouraged to provide a word count that includes text and footnotes to facilitate faster review of their manuscripts.
Submitting a Manuscript
The Journal strongly prefers that authors submit articles through Scholastica. As a reminder, the Journal is listed as The Georgetown Law Journal under the “T’s” in Scholastica. Alternatively, authors without Scholastica accounts may submit their articles as a Microsoft Word attachment to email@example.com. Authors are asked to provide an abstract and CV with their submissions.
Requests for Expedited Review
Requests for expedited review should be made via email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please use “Expedited Review Request” and the article title as the subject line of the email, and include the following information in the body of the email: the author’s name, the article’s title, a contact phone number, the journal making the offer, and the deadline for the expedited review to be completed. Because of the large number of expedited review requests we receive and the limited time frame that we have to complete the review, we are not always able personally to respond to each request. Nonetheless, we will make every effort to review each expedite within the time constraints.
An essential element of The Georgetown Law Journal’s mission is to encourage and provide a forum for the publication of students’ academic scholarship. In keeping with this goal, the Notes Committee typically selects two or three student notes for publication in each issue.
Through an anonymous selection process, the Notes Committee considers many aspects of each paper, including the timeliness of the issue discussed, the novelty of the author’s argument and analysis, the appeal of the topic to a generalist legal audience, the quality of the writing, and the paper’s compliance with current Bluebook standards.

The Notes Manual
The Notes Committee developed the Notes Manual to guide GULC students through the process of writing a note of publishable quality. The Notes Manual provides (1) detailed information on the note requirement for Journal members; (2) what a note is and what it should accomplish; (3) topic selection; (4) the mechanics of writing a note; (5) the elements of a publishable note; and (6) the Notes Committee Selection Criteria. Journal members are required to submit a note for consideration to fulfill the writing component of their Journal experience. The Note is due in February of each member's graduating year (3L/4E). Journal members may submit multiple notes for publication.
Non-Journal Member GULC Students
The Journal also invites the submission of papers by GULC students who are not Journal members. These papers must conform to the note submission procedures listed on this page.
Recently Graduated GULC Students
All recently graduated GULC students may submit for consideration papers that they wrote while students at the Law Center. The deadline for these submissions will coincide with the submission deadline that falls in July or August after graduation. See below for specific deadlines.

Submission Procedure for GULC Students
Submissions should be emailed to James Feeney, Senior Notes Editor, at email@example.com.
The submission should be anonymous; the author’s name and other identifying information should be removed from the document. Please use 1" margins and double space the document (except for block quotes or other special formatting). Although there is no specific length requirement, the submission should generally be at least 6,000 words. The author must also submit a brief anonymous statement of originality, not to exceed one page, explaining the unique nature and relevance of the note in the context of the larger academic dialogue.
To comply with GULC requirements, students cannot submit for consideration papers written for courses at GULC until the papers have been submitted to the Registrar for a grade.
The Georgetown Law Journal Online is published exclusively on the web. It is a separate publication from the Journal’s print edition. GLJ Online accepts essays, responses to published pieces, and student work such as case comments and notes.
We can offer two-week turnarounds from acceptance to publication for timely pieces addressing current topics in the law.
While a length of about 3,000 words is preferred, pieces that are longer or shorter will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The Journal will give preference to timely articles focused on current events, current issues in the law, and pending and recently decided cases.
You may also submit a response to a published or forthcoming print or online piece. A response may take the form of an Article, Essay, or Letter to the Editors.
All current Georgetown Law students and recent graduates until the September following graduation may submit case comments, short articles, or notes. Submissions should be shorter than 4,000 words above-the-line with fewer than 1,250 words in footnotes. The Georgetown Law Journal Online will also consider longer student notes on a case-by-case basis.
Submissions will be reviewed via a selection process that includes evaluation of the relevance of the topic to Washington, D.C. (including the Supreme Court, federal agencies, and Congress), the timeliness of the issue discussed, the novelty of the author’s argument and analysis, the appeal of the topic to a generalist legal audience, and compliance with current Bluebook standards.
Please submit a copy of your comment, short article, or note with personal identifying information removed. Students can submit work at any time. Selections are made seasonally by the Journal’s Online Committee.
